Time for them to go…

October 25th, 2003 by Brock

Tonight, it was five overtime periods. A hard-fought, but hard-hitting loss to Tennessee. I love Bama… I really do. But it's time to make some changes to that coaching staff. I am very well aware that Mike Shula is going through his first year as a head coach anywhere, and he inherited a program that's been in some turmoil over the last couple of years. So for him, I'll cut a great deal of slack. But for the Offensive/QB coach, Dave Rader, what in the world were you thinking? Amy and I sat in Bryant-Denny Stadium for six hours tonight. From 1:30-7:30. Five overtime periods… the next biggest rivalry after that cow college in eastern Alabama… and I saw two of the dumbest calls in my life. Unfortunately, they were given to Tide QB Brodie Croyle. That kid is fun to watch. Especially since he's playing with a separated left shoulder. But, man… where in the world do you get the bright idea to throw a pass on third or fourth down and you are on the one-yard line? You are about to score, and you throw a pass. Anyone should know that you just push your running game over the goal line. Instead, you wind up with absolutely nothing on the play. That play was the one that cost us a victory in regulation time. I fully believe that. The other dumb call was in the fifth overtime. Fourth and two to go. What happens? The call was, once again, to pass the ball. I think the running game could've picked up those two yards for the first down. But, a pass was thrown, and boom. Batted down… here's your loss. Five losses in six games. After a sloppy October, the defense finally picked it up tonight and did well, but Defensive coach Joe Kines needs to be released, too. He was hired for his less-than-two-years head coaching experience. Now I know why he didn't last that long. I hope Shula reorganizes his staff when the season is over. I love you guys, but this hopefully won't happen next year when we're bowl eligible again.

But on a happy note… at least LSU beat the War Pigeons… and the freaking Yankees lost. That makes the night a little better. :-)
