Countdown to the job hunt…
In my final broadcast news class, we're starting to get the ball rolling on job searches. We've got to bring in three job listings next week that we're interested in. Amy and I have been talking about where we wouldn't mind living. So far, we've been agreeing on a lot of places. She understands that we may have to pack up and head west for my first year or two out of college. As long as I can get back to the Southeast before too long, she'll be fine. We're just praying about it and asking God to place us where He sees fit.
One place that came up is Reno. That's where we spent three of seven days on our honeymoon. It's a nice area with Lake Tahoe and Yosemite National Park nearby. That's a big plus for us since that was our first vacation. Jobs aren't readily available out there, but the market size is perfect for someone with my experience. It's not too big and not too small. I don't think I would mind it at all. It's far from our families, but it makes a great vacation for them when they visit. However, Reno is kind of a daydream right now. There are a lot of closer places that I'll be applying for. It just all depends on who's looking for reporters around March and April.
We were checking out salary ranges in certain markets, too. I'm not at all impressed with what most people are offering for college graduates. However, this is where I have a leg on most kids who are graduating. I now have two years in television (one year reporting and one year production). That's not a whole lot, but throw in my 11.5 years of radio experience and now we're talking.
I hope my radio time will factor into my salary. I did see some pretty decent salaries, too. There are some places I would sacrifice going to for what they were paying. But… it's not my choice. I can only ask to work for someone. It's up them to decide if they want me, too.
