I had a great time with everyone down at WSFA today. I stayed quite a while longer than I thought I would, and it was really worth it. It was a nice change of scenery.
I had my iPod plugged in for the trip down. I’ve started downloading and listening to Dave Ramsey’s financial show. If you’ve never heard of him, he’s got some great motivation and tips to get out of debt.
We don’t have a lot of debt, mind you. One credit card, a student loan and a mortgage are all keeping us from being financially free. The amount of each isn’t that great, but when you’re living off one income, it can be grueling.
Ramsey encourages a “debt snowball.” Take the smallest debt first (regardless of interest rate), and put every extra dollar on it. Pay your minimum payments on the others to keep them current. When you pay off the smallest debt, take that monthly payment, and add it to your minimum payment on the next-smallest. Thus, the snowball effect.
That’s just one of his many “baby steps” to becoming financially free. We’re starting Ramsey’s classes at church this Sunday evening, so we’re about to go at this full-force. The next couple of years will be extremely hard, but I know it will be worth it once we get everything paid off, except the mortgage. That will take a little while longer, but if we can knock out the card and student loan, we can breathe a lot easier.
I guess since I’ve brought this guy up, you might as well check out his site at DaveRamsey.com. I know all this sounds like a shameless plug, but it’s not. We’re just excited to find a program that can actually work for us. I just pray we can stick to this.
It sounds simple, but there are many other factors in his plans. This is just the tip of the iceberg to no longer relying on credit and being self-sustaining.Yeah, it’s truly one of my ramblings, but it’s been on my mind for quite some time.
After all, you don’t get into the TV news business expecting to get rich.

Today should be interesting. I’m shooting my sweeps piece out-of-town this afternoon. I’ll be in Montgomery later today and working with our sister station, WSFA.
This should prove to be pretty cool. I like everyone down there, and it will be neat to work with someone different. I’ll probably head down to Columbus soon after.
I plan on working on my story down there, and then I’ll head out with Sean and others for dinner. It will certainly be a nice change of pace. I need it with the day I had Tuesday.

I’ll be the first to admit I’ve been a Prince fan for years. I’ll also be the first to say I haven’t liked everything he’s done, but he’s always been a great musician. The Super Bowl halftime show last night proved it.
I enjoyed the game for the most part. The Super Bowl is actually the only NFL game of the year I’ll watch from beginning to end. I can watch multiple college games in the fall, but I’ve never been really intrigued by the pro level.
The commercials this year for me were… eh. I could do without seeing Jessica Simpson chasing a pizza. Heck, the pizza has more intelligence than she could hope for. However, I did enjoy the first fan-made Doritos commercial.
I’ve really gotten off-track with this post.
Despite the game and the commercials, the highlight of the night for me was Prince. I’m glad the NFL tagged him to do it. He was controversial at one point in his career, but last night he was pure entertainment.
Kudos to you, NFL, but bigger kudos to Prince. Nothing flashy, except the great music. If you missed it, try to find the video. It’s worth it just to hear him sing Purple Rain on a purple stage… in the rain.

I managed to do a story today about a curse word inside a child’s electronic learning toy. It’s a perfectly acceptable word by today’s standard, and I could have easily said it on the newscast without blinking. However, I managed to do the whole story without saying it once.
I’m somewhat proud of that.
