Sunday night

November 18th, 2007 by Brock

It’s been a very restful day at the house.  All three of us are not feeling well, so it’s been relatively quiet.  I got home from that horrible, embarrassing Alabama-LaMonroe game around 11:00 last night, and I’ve been sore ever since.  That goes for both physical and mental states.

What a pathetic game.  I don’t know where Bama’s players’ heads were, but they weren’t in that game.  I’ve mentioned here several times that things won’t get better until Shula’s players are gone.  Even Saban made a comment in the press conference afterward about the guys from the previous administration not knowing how to finish games or seasons.  I paraphrased that, but that’s what he said in a more polite way.  I was very happy to hear him say that.

I keep reminding myself that in Saban’s first year with LSU, they lost to UAB and had a bad year.  They eventually went on to win two SEC titles and a national championship in five years.  That’s the only comfort I’m finding right now.

I am very sore in my lower back and feet today.  I think it may have something to do with the shoes I wore, but I wear them all the time when I shoot football.  I don’t know why they would be bothering me now.

It’s Thanksgiving week, and I’m ready for it.  It should prove to be an easy week, and then I shoot the Iron Bowl Saturday.  That won’t be so easy after the loss.

I don’t have too much more to say.  I’m sorry it turned into another negative post.  I just don’t feel the best in the world.  The best thing about this weekend was seeing Brad and Doug at the game.  I also got to see an old UA teacher, Chandra, for the first time since college.  That was awesome.  She is one of my favorite people there.

I’ll close and get some sleep.  This week will be better.  After all, turkey’s a-comin’!  :-)

TiVo?

November 15th, 2007 by Brock

I doubt I’ll get a lot of comments here, but if you have a TiVo (or any DVR, I suppose), what do you record?  Here’s my list:

  • The Office (NBC)
  • Las Vegas (NBC)
  • American Chopper (TLC)
  • Ghost Hunters (SciFi)
  • College GameDay (ESPN)
  • World Series of Poker (ESPN2)
  • Mythbusters (Discovery)
  • Dirty Jobs (Discovery)
  • The Sopranos (A&E)

Amy records:

  • Diagnosis Murder (Ion, Hallmark)
  • McBride (Hallmark)
  • Actually, any murder mystery on those two channels…  :-)

Even Alyssa gets two shows:

  • Barney and Friends (PBS)
  • Caillou (PBS)

And that’s really all the television we watch.  I think I watch way more than I should.  I just thought I’d toss that out.

Holiday homestretch

November 15th, 2007 by Brock

It’s been an interesting day to say the least.  I started out with two stories I didn’t think would pan out to be anything major, and it ballooned to four good ones by the time the show started.  I had the top four stories on the 5 p.m. newscast tonight. On top of that, I sat on an hour-long media panel at our Emergency Operations Center.  It was a basic public information officer course on how local government officials can relate to us media-types.

My buddy Katie also finally announced to the rest of the crew that she’s taken a job in Austin, Texas.  It’s outside of TV news, and it’s in my old Air Force stomping grounds. She’s got a little more than a month left, and I’m going to absolutely miss her.  I always get close to my producers, and then they bolt.  :-)   This will be an awesome change for her, though.  All my best, my dear friend.

My friend Jaime is also leaving my competitor.  She’s stepping down as the east Alabama gal for Warble.  I hate to see her go since she’s a great girl, but it will be a good move for her.  I used to work at her station, and I can tell you some management horror stories there.  I’ll save that for if/when I leave my station.  No need ruffling the feathers.

This weekend also marks the last trip to Tuscaloosa, and it could be my last Friday night to shoot high school football.  I’m excited it’s almost over because it means it’s the holiday season, and I don’t have to give up so much of my weekend anymore.  I still have one more Bama game to shoot, but it’s here in town… the Iron Bowl!

I’m in a very peaceful place tonight.  Amy and I have been doing a lot of praying on some life decisions coming up, and I always think more about them around this time of the year.  It’s cold outside, it’s warm inside and I’m at my happiest around the holidays.  I’ve been uptight the last couple of weeks, but God has put a peace inside me about these decisions.  It’s all just a waiting game.  :-)

I ain’t afraid of no ghost!

November 14th, 2007 by Brock

YES!!  I saw the videos on YouTube early this year (they’ve since been removed), and I went nuts!  GameSpot confirmed it today!

“Ghostbusters to slime consoles, PC”

The best part is it’s a sequel to the first two films, and it’s being written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis!  It will feature their voices, as well as Bill Murray!

I’m beyond happy about this.  The game demo videos looked sweet, and I hope the entire game is just as good.

Stealing this post

November 13th, 2007 by Brock

Kudos to Stewart “Lenslinger” Pittman, a television photographer with a great blog.  I hope he doesn’t mind me reposting this, as I’m giving him full credit.

He hits the nail on the head with these observations.  I’m not only a reporter, but I’m known as a “one-man-band.” I also shoot for myself, so I can understand where he’s coming from.  I give you Lenslinger’s “Confessions of a Cameraman.”

“When I first started hanging out in newsrooms, I’d pop up like a prairie dog every damn time the scanners burped. Today when spot news bleeds from that row of police radios, I more resemble an infected ferret, as I l fast-crawl out of the room on my toes and fingertips.

I have such a healthy respect for the art of lighting that I rarely attempt it myself. Instead, I scan interior localess for well-placed windows, brackish splashes and puddles of daylight. Lazy? Perhaps, but I’d rather harvest ambient illumination than search for wall outlets. Bad knees, donchaknow…

Unlike in the movies, we don’t recoil in disgust whenever another news crew rolls up on scene. See, in the field logos don’t matter half as much as esprit de corps. Amble up to the scrum with a laid back vibe and I‘ll share my batteries if you need ‘em. Come at me with an attitude and I just may stick a leg out when you start to backpedal

Whenever I’m shooting video in a elementary or middle school, I look for the most unremarkable looking kid in the classroom and make sure he or she gets on television that night. Those dorks in high school are on their own.

We park our cameras with purpose. Thus, if I’m squatting behind you with my lens on your feet, don’t move out of the way. If I’ve camped out on the other side of the houseplant, leave it be. If I’m set up at the back of a crowded conference room there’s absolutely no need to duck into a crouch as you walk by. Unless of course you’re a wanted felon. Move along, please…

You do not have to be looking in the viewfinder to be recording. One of the first things you figure out how to do when left alone with a camera is to deny the damn thing is even on. So, if you’re picking your nose at a city council meeting across from what appears to be an inattentive TV camera – well, go ahead and set your DVR.

I use to s-t-r-e-s-s en route to stories: mentally reviewing equipment checklists, worrying about how I might capture all the pictures, sound and details once I got there and generally questioning my self-worth. Now, I can race to an orphanage fire and daydream about old Seinfeld episodes all the way. Is that wrong?

Yes, we can hear you – we’re just ignoring you. You’d feign deafness too, if two out of five otherwise sane citizens soiled themselves in your presence Personally, I physically cannot even hear the words “Hi Mom!”, “Put me on TEE-VEE!”, or “Hey, where’s that purty weather lady?” Selective deafness – it isn’t just for teenagers anymore!

Sure, we wanna do quality work. But if that means escorting some obnoxious dolt through his day, count me out. In other words, if you’re a really talented reporter but your braying laugh, delusions of superiority or pre-interview speech make you a drag to be around, I’d just as soon make a star of that intern with the unibrow.

Underestimate me all you want, I can spot a talker from across a shopping mall food court, make you look fat with the twist of a light-stand, put a top-heavy live truck into a controlled hydroplane and interview an Economics professor without ever letting on I don’t know what the hell I’m talking about. Just don’t ask me to learn the phone system. A man’s got to know his limitations.”

Bravo!
