The power of Twitter and tragedy from home
March 10th, 2009 · No Comments
First of all, please pray for the folks in my hometown of Geneva. I’m actually from Coffee Springs, right in the middle of Geneva and Samson, but I spent most of my time in Geneva since that’s where I graduated from high school. What a terrible day for my friends and loved ones there.
However, I couldn’t help but pass this along. Twitter is more powerful than I thought. It seems more news agencies are watching Twitter feeds to help their stories.
Since I’m from Geneva County, I wrote some stuff on Twitter shortly after the news broke about the shootings. Within 10 minutes, a reporter from the BBC e-mailed me asking if I could point her to some people there. She said she saw my “tweets,” and I was able to put her in contact with my best friend and the local weekly paper editor. They both helped her out, and it was top story on the BBC Web site tonight.
I have yet to hear if I know anyone killed, but here’s hoping I don’t. I love all of you back home.
