Silence is bliss, but so are podcasts.

April 2nd, 2010 by Brock

I finally have a few minutes of free time to write some thoughts down.  This year has been one of the most hectic I can remember in awhile, and it’s only April.

My guys and gals in khaki are busy, busy and busy.  That about sums it up.  We have been to one convention in Tuscaloosa, had a workshop, a school clean-up in Auburn, the St. Patrick’s Day parade in Birmingham, a walk for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in Montgomery and we have another Walk MS coming up in Huntsville.  So, yeah.  We’re a highly active group right now.

It’s worth it, though.  I remember going to see “Ghostbusters” when I was just eight-years-old in the theater.  I’ve always wanted the proton pack and the rest of the gear.  I’ve never been able to get it all until this past year or so.  One of my friends stated she didn’t know what to think; how cool it is to know someone who dresses up and does charity events, or how awkward it is that I’m almost 34 and getting into this outfit.  :)   It’s all about charity and community.  It’s nice to be able to give back finally, especially in a fun way.

Outside of that, work has been going pretty well.  I’ve been slammed lately, and today was no exception.  Everyone else in the office took off early because it’s Good Friday.  The only problem is a few of them have sites that go live Monday, and they waited until the last moment (today) to pile every change and request on me.  So, while they got off a little early, I wound up staying later than usual making sure everything was ready to go live when I get in next week.  It kind of rubbed me the wrong way when I walked out around 4 p.m. only to see most every hallway door closed for the weekend.  It still took me another hour-and-a-half to get out of there.  I shouldn’t complain, though.  It’s job security.

I’ve been in a funk of sorts at home.  If you’re a parent (like I’ve said many times), you can understand why.  I really want us to break away for a couple of days without the kids.  We’re both trying really hard to stay connected to one another as a husband and wife first instead of mom and dad.  It’s like our associate pastor said, though.  We’re in that season of life where the house doesn’t get cleaned, we don’t get quiet time or we don’t get to communicate well.  They’re growing up too fast as it is, and it won’t be too long before they don’t give us any attention at all.  It seems like these three topics are all I talk about anymore, but honestly, they encompass my life so much.

I’m thinking of starting a podcast.  Don’t know if it will be with ALGB, or if it will be a little slice of everything.  I’d rather do a focused show because that will draw a certain and bigger audience.  Truth is, I miss radio a lot right now.   I even went so far as to buy a professional mic, boom and shock mount.  My desk looks almost like a mini-studio with it right now, and it’s the same equipment I used at most of my stations.

The difference is I’m not bound by rules or playlists.  I can just kick back and talk.  The fact it’s audio and not video is another appealing aspect.  I don’t miss TV reporting.  I don’t miss shooting and editing video.  I can do it, and it can be fun, but it’s not the same as letting your mind visualize the story just by listening.

That being said (if you’re still reading this post), what would you like to hear in a podcast?  I can talk tech, pop culture, whatever’s on your mind.  Would you listen?  Would you be willing to Skype in and participate?  I certainly don’t think I’ll get many people tuning in, but who knows?

I guess I’ve written enough for tonight.  I really need some help thinking of podcast subjects.  Please send them my way through comments or the e-mail page.

It’s time for Star Trek Online.  Night!
